Tracing my roots - Lisa Williams

Writer's picture: GoldenGroveGelliAurGoldenGroveGelliAur

My name is Lisa Williams and I’m originally from Pontypridd.

My 3 x great grandfather Samuel Cuthbert was born in Flodden, Northumberland in 1831. He worked for Cawdor on his estate in Scotland from a young age as a shepherd.

When Cawdor inherited Gelli Aur Samuel came with him. In 1854 Samuel got married to Mary Humphreys (b. 1825 Cockington, Devon) in Llandeilo. I am uncertain as to whether they might have met in service.

In 1856 my 2x great grandfather James was born on the estate.

The family lived in Menagerie cottages (which is an interesting name) and then West Lodge. When Cawdor inherited the Stackpole estate in Pembrokeshire,

Samuel and his family went with him yet again. He served as a loyal employee of Cawdor as a shepherd/gamesman until his death in 1890. Cawdor erected quite an ornate gravestone for Samuel in a prominent position in Stackpole churchyard
